Welcome to Cronos Energy

Powering a green energy system

The Cronos Energy interconnector will create a direct power link between Belgium and Great Britain, connecting the two countries’ energy markets and increasing the security and reliability of their electrical systems in addition to facilitating the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

During times when renewable generation in either country exceeds local demand, this carbon-free electricity can be exported, benefitting consumers and the environment alike.

The interconnector will be a combination of land and subsea cables approximately 200km in length and will allow 1.4GW of electricity to move in either direction, enough to power up to 1.5 million homes.

Interconnectors are high-voltage electricity cables that link and help integrate the energy networks of neighbouring countries. In addition to making both countries’ electrical grids more resilient and reliable, interconnectors also make it possible to build more zero-carbon generation like wind and solar. This is because at times when generation exceeds demand in one country, the excess green power can be exported to the other. Ultimately, consumers benefit from increased competition and reduced carbon emissions.

By connecting the Great Britain and Belgian energy markets, Cronos Energy will make the electricity supply in both countries more resilient, secure, and sustainable, benefitting consumers and the environment alike.

Importantly, Cronos Energy will help both countries decarbonize their electricity sectors. By making it possible to share renewable energy resources between Great Britain and Belgium, it’s estimated Cronos Energy will decrease the amount of electricity produced from natural gas and reduce net carbon emissions in both countries by a total of 4 megatonnes over 25 years.

Cronos Energy represents a GBP 950 million investment that will support hundreds of jobs during the multiyear development and construction phases, creating significant economic benefits in both countries. In addition, by increasing choice and competition in the British and Belgian electricity markets, Cronos Energy can help stabilize and even lower prices for consumers and businesses.

The Cronos Energy interconnector will link Kemsley, England with a to-be-determined site in Belgium. Discussions to assess a range of connection options are ongoing with Elia Transmission Belgium, the national system operator.
